The Story Behind the music
Contrary to the obvious, 'Grow Up' isn't a love song to me, although..... music is totally open to the interpretation of the listener..... I wrote it about an employer I used to work for when I was 20 years old. I worked in a bakery and I had such a wonderful time BUT, my employer would always complain about my appearance. I didn't appear shabby, I just didn't look the way she wanted me to. The complaints progressed to the point where she took me to a saloon to cut my hair. I didn't mind, I worked for her and I wanted to make her happy, and keep my job.
However, After a while, her fixation on my appearance, became suffocating. It went from my hair to every other aspect of my life, when all I wanted to do, was do my job and go home. She just wanted to fix me. I could bear it, until one day, I went to work with a brand new hairstyle that I thought she'd be proud of, Instead, she told me to go home and loose the hair, if I still wanted to work with her. Needless to say, it blew my mind. So instead of going home, I just quit the job.
When I got home that day, I wrote 'Grow Up'. So while it was produced recently, this song was written 5 years ago. I wanted to tell her that although I understood where she was coming from, I didn't need all that fixing. I was fine the way I was. You should know that you are fine the way you are. If it takes you walking away from toxic situations to be "Your own kind of beautiful", then by all means..... walk away and reconvene when you're both grown up.
When I played Johnny the song, I didn't tell him the story behind it, I just let him do what he does best. And we can collectively agree that he gave the song, exactly what it needed, in terms of productions and collaboration. I'm truly lucky to have shared this process with him. He produced the song and interpreted his lyrics in a way that only a true artist would. He told a different story and opened the song up to a whole new interpretation and a whole the audience. Through his verse, you can hear the other side of the story..... because there's always two sides to a story.
